The Changes from Beneful Dog Food

The new trends in dog food are to feed your furry friend food like what you yourself would eat. People want their pets to eat as well as they eat since most people view their pets as a member of their family.
Beneful dog food is one brand that has dealt with criticism based on the ingredients they use. Nestle PurinaStore PetCare started Beneful in 2001. It is one of the highest selling pet food companies in the United States. Fourteen million dogs eat it each year.

Twitter bloggers have been critical of Beneful using propylene glycol which is confused with ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is an ingredient that is in anti-freeze and is poisonous to dogs. Propylene glycol is not the same and it is in foods humans and dogs eat. It is approved by the FDA for people and animals to consume it. Additionally dog food critics have complained about dyes in Beneful and that there may be myotoxins in the food. Myotoxins actually are present in many dry dog foods and aren’t actually hazardous.

In 2015 Nestle had a class action suit brought against them for these ingredient complaints. Nestle Purina says the case is ongoing and the suit has been changed in wording repeatedly.

Purina reformulated Beneful recently and released the new recipes May 9. They will be widely in distribution by August of this year. The new recipes are: Originals with Real Beef, Originals with Real Salmon, Originals with Real Chicken, Incredibles with Real Chicken, Incredibles with Real Beef, Healthy Weight, Playful Life and Healthy Puppy. They removed propylene glycol and added sugar from the ingredients. They replaced the propylene with glycerin. Beneful also says they are considering changing the formula of their wet food.

The new recipes were tested and approved by volunteer pet owners with their pets. No dogs became sick. Nothing had to be approved again by the AAFCO.

Beneful only had a recall for pet food in March, but it was because the wet dog food tubs didn’t have the recommended amount of vitamins and minerals.

Beneful isn’t going to be the dog food some pet owners will want to choose. Still pet owners should rest assured that Beneful has safe and healthy ingredients in their pet food. Check out http://wm6.walmart.com/purina-beneful.aspx for more info!
